Leather Crafting Experience with Japanese Paper in Ise-Shima (Craftsperson Support Plan)
A special experience where tradition and innovation intersect.
A special experience guided directly by a master artisan, where tradition and innovation come together.
Around 350 years ago, faux leather paper tobacco cases made from Gikakushi
became a popular souvenir for pilgrims visiting Ise.
Although the technique was once lost, it has been revived in recent years by skilled artisans and is now attracting renewed attention.
During this experience, the artisan personally introduces the history and production methods of Gikakushi, followed by a hands-on session where participants try their hand at processing traditional Japanese paper.
Participants will also create a unique craft piece by combining Gikakushi
with Iga Kumihimo, a traditional craft of Mie Prefecture.
Through this creative process, time-honored techniques and contemporary sensibilities resonate, offering a truly one-of-a-kind crafting experience.
For the Inner Shrine on-site plan, the venue is Isuzujuku, a cultural facility located just a short distance from Ise Grand Shrine (Naiku).
Designed as a place to experience traditional culture and craftsmanship, the venue offers a calm and refined Japanese atmosphere.
Upon request, the on-site plan can also be arranged at accommodations or special venues within the Ise-Shima area.
