Leather Crafting Experience with Japanese Paper in Ise-Shima (Craftsperson Support Plan)
Enjoy a uniquely traditional yet innovative crafting experience with the guidance of a true professional craftsperson themselves.
Long ago, when it was culturally not a norm to eat meat in Japan, Japanese people were not familiar with leather. When the importation of leather to Japan began to spread, “Gikakushi”—an imitation leather crafted by processing washi paper—was invented. 350 years ago, tobacco pouches made of Gikakushi were a very popular souvenir during pilgrimages to Ise. Once a lost tradition, it has recently been revived thanks to the hard work of traditional craftspeople and is once again attracting attention. During the experience, the craftsperson will personally explain the history and production methods of Gikakushi, and participants will try their hand at the actual creation. Furthermore, through a crafting process that combines the Gikakushi with Mie Prefecture’s traditional craft, “Iga Kumihimo” braiding, you can enjoy a truly unique creative experience where traditional techniques resonate with modern sensibilities.
